Home Gyms –Advantages and Equipment Ideas for Your Own Home Gym – Part 1

A home gym is an area where you can perform many exercises so you can build and maintain your health. In this two part article series, I would like to discuss advantages and equipment ideas. If you need an idea of what home gym equipment to get, you may want to consider setting up free weights first.

Specifically I recommend getting a weight bench, a standard weight set, and standard dumbbell handles. If you’re creative you will be able to use the home gym equipment to your advantage and be able to maintain your fitness lifestyle for years to come.

The weight bench should be the central piece to all of your home gym equipment. You want to get a bench that is sturdy so you can lift a lot of weight. The weight bench should be flat and allow you to set it an incline. The incline allows you to upper body exercises at different angles. A solid bench also does not wobble while lifting weights and encourages an environment for you to concentrate on moving the weight.

If you have limited space for home gym equipment I would recommend buying standard weights as opposed to Olympic Weights. Olympic Weight Bars are heavy and take up a lot of room and you may not have the space to work out. On the other hand, most standard weight bars are lighter to handle and are approximately 5 feet long.

In my opinion standard weight bars are easier store when you have limited space for home gym equipment. Look for a standard weight sets that have 100 lbs or more of weights included. 100 lbs is great for starters. However, you’ll eventually need more weight as you get more advanced with weight lifting. I would recommend getting an additional 100 lbs of weight in the form of 10 lb plates, 5 lb plates and 2.5 lb plates.

Even though a standard weight set includes a set of dumbbell handles, an extra set is needed. Dumbbells are usually the mostly used items for weight lifting at home (along with the 5 foot barbell). An extra set of dumbbell handles will allow you to perform drop sets as well as super sets.

After you get the first three items described above, additional items you can get for your home gym are mats to protect your floor. Also, a stability ball adds variation to abdominal exercises and you may want to get a Barbell Plate Rack. A barbell plate rack will help you store your weights in an organized manner and gives your home gym a neat and professional look.

If you are stuck for exercise ideas you should invest in a basic weight lifting book to help you design your home gym workouts. So if you’re looking set up a home gym, a weight bench, weight set and Standard Dumbbell Handles will be great to start with as you advance into working out at home.
